Farmers' Market
Wymondham held its first farmers' market on Saturday 25th March 2000 and this proved to be a great success. Farmers' markets have proved popular elsewhere in the country, bringing together farmers who want to sell their produce direct to the public with those who want to meet and buy straight from the producer. As well as helping local farmers, the markets will bring people into the town and there are likely to be benefits for other local traders. Farmers' Markets will be held monthly in the Market Place, on the third Saturday morning of each month.
Farmers' Market Double Celebration
Organisers and traders at Wymondham farmers' market had a double reason to celebrate on Saturday 19th March 2005.
Regular stallholders Barry and Ali Garner had just heard that they had qualified for the second stage of a national competition for food producers (sponsored by Waitrose), putting them in the running to win a £5,000 cash prize. The couple farm 270 acres at Carleton Rode, near Attleborough, and have been regular suppliers of potatoes on the market since it was set up in March 2000.
News of their progress in the competition came as Wymondham farmers' market celebrated its fifth anniversary and the friendly team of traders and organisers shared a cake and raised a toast to the double success.
Barry Garner said "We were absolutely astounded to hear that we had reached the next round of the competition".
The couple now have to submit a sample of their potatoes, in time for the final judging, which takes place on the 8th April 2005.
The next farmers’ market in Wymondham will be on Saturday, March 19 2005 from 9.00am – 1.00pm.
The market was set up and is jointly co-ordinated by Wymondham Town Council and Wymondham Development Partnership.
